Experience
Hello, my name is Aminata and I'm looking to tutor students in the Queens/Brooklyn area. Here are some items of note from my resume/background: 1) I completed fourteen weeks of student teaching in Jersey City, NJ. For roughly ten weeks I was fully responsible for daily instruction, lesson planning, grading and designing tests and assignments for two sections of African-American History and one section of Financial Literacy. I have an active substitute/student-teaching liscence in Jersey City. 2) I tutored college students in Introductory Sociology at Saint Peter's University for 1.5 years. Subsequently, I privately tutored a high school student in beginner's Latin for about four months through UniversityTutor. 3) The Classics are a major interest of mine. I completed five years of Latin (including IB Higher Level Latin and one year at the intermediate collegiate level) and one year of Attic Greek. Some of my accomplishments in Latin include a perfect paper, two gold medals and a silver medal on the National Latin Exam, a Book Award from my school and a 2nd place finish during my first ever certamen match. I have experience translating poetry and prose, scanning poetry and I’ve dabbled in spoken Latin. 4) History is another great passion of mine. Outside of Ancient History, I am very interested in American History. My honors thesis, titled "Strange Fruit and Southern Horrors: Ida B. Wells Crusade Against Lynch Law", focused on lynching in the Post-Reconstruction South. Although I enjoy Ancient and American history, my coursework at Saint Peter’s has touched on Women’s history, Medieval history, Modern European history, the history of the World Wars and the Interwar period and much more. 5) I pursued a minor in Secondary Education. Some of my relevant coursework in this area included two field experiences and Educational Psychology. I am used to working with adolescents who are transitioning to college through Saint Peter’s previously mentioned tutoring service (called the Getting Engaged in Mentoring Students, or GEMS, Peer Mentors). I worked with high school students in the Leaders in Training Program at one of the country's oldest summer camps (where I earned my CPR/First Aid Cert). 6) I taught English as a Foreign Language in Osaka, Japan to students as young as 18 months and old as 80 years. 7) I have worked as a substitute teacher at the elementary level in dozens of schools in NYC. 8)I believe that education is a human right and I will teach any student that I come across.
